Released three decades ago, perhaps Last Action Hero was just too far ahead of its time. Directed by John McTiernan, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as both himself and Jack Slater, the main character of a fictional action movie franchise. Austin O’Brien also stars as a young boy who gets magically transported into the Jack Slater universe, and when the movie’s villain (Charles Dance) escapes into the real world, Jack Slater follows him through the fourth wall to put a stop to him. Though an action film itself, the movie was also a comedy, satirizing the well-known tropes of the genre.
