The popularity of the rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy is something that caught many moviegoers by surprise. With 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes setting the tone, the series continued to grow in creativity under the direction of Matt Reeves with the subsequent releases of 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. This could be why there was a small sense of skepticism when The Maze Runner director Wes Ball was selected to take on the next film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes but, given the film’s current Rotten Tomatoes score, that skepticism may have been completely unfounded.
