Nicolas Cage has signed on to play legendary football coach John Madden in a new film directed by David O. Russell. John Madden is an iconic figure in sports, having served as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978 and leading them to eight playoff appearances. Madden never had a losing season and to this day holds the highest winning percentage among NFL head coaches who have coached at least 100 games. His incredible run as a sports commentator from 1979 to 2009, along with his coaching career, made Madden so iconic that EA Sports licenses his name for the popular video game series Madden NFL.
