While Fear and The Basketball Diaries did much to shed his white-boy rapper persona, it was ultimately Boogie Nights that made people realize Mark Wahlberg had much more potential than his Marky Mark moniker suggested. For his fifth movie, he played Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic drama about the adult film industry. Boogie Nights was probably the most important movie for his career, and also arguably his most controversial, to the extent that Wahlberg doesn’t think it could even be made today.
