While Frank Herbert fans debate the quality of Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune movies as “adaptations” of Herbert’s work, the director himself believes he’s successfully captured the essence of the novels while creating his own vision. To do so, Villeneuve looked to one of the greatest book-to-movie adaptations of all time, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. Villeneuve’s Dune series shares surprising similarities with Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies. As well as adapting the most influential books in their respective genres, both directors undertook grueling production schedules with Jackson shooting all three LOTR movies back-to-back, and Villeneuve shooting Dune and Dune: Part Two under one production.
