David Gordon Green found the story of Nutcrackers in his friend’s backyard. Well, kind of. Nutcrackers is his warmhearted new holiday dramedy about an uptight businessman (Ben Stiller) whose independent world is upended when his sister and brother-in-law pass away, and he finds himself caring for their four young children on their farm in the immediate aftermath. The roots of Nutcrackers lie in Green’s own masterful directorial debut, George Washington, from 25 years ago, where he befriended the second unit cinematographer.
