‘Gladiator II’ Nearly Cast Timothe Chalamet as Lucius Before Paul Mescal

Lucius in Gladiator II nearly looked very different, as Ridley Scott revealed two other A-list actors were once the front-runners for the role. Normal People star, Paul Mescal, plays the aged-up Prince of Rome (who was first played by Spencer Treat Clark) in Scott’s long-awaited sequel. The director said he cast Mescal in the role after unexpectedly binge-watching and loving the hit BBC drama. But, before Scott found himself falling in love with Connell (Mescal’s character in the show) and his chain, several other actors were considered to play Lucius.
