While directors often get the brunt of credit, first assistant directors are arguably just as crucial in turning a vision into a reality (something detailed brilliantly in HBO’s new series, The Franchise). Many filmmakers and producers begin as assistant directors, while others are especially suited for that role, which combines the creativity of directing with the management of production. Adam Somner, who passed away this week on Nov. 27, 2024, was known as one of the best. He worked with Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, among others, and had an incredible filmography as a director and producer. He died of anaplastic thyroid cancer at the age of 59.
