Disney’s massive success in recent years has also come with criticism due to the number of sequels and remakes that continue to grow, as opposed to the small amount of original stories and projects. The post-pandemic theatrical landscape led to original Pixar films such as Luca and Turning Red receiving a direct-to-streaming release. In contrast, this year, the Pixar sequel Inside Out 2 is currently the highest-grossing film of 2024, delivering the message that people wanted more of what’s familiar.
