Snow White star Rachel Zegler exploded onto the Hollywood scene thanks to her breakout role as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s must-see reimagining of the Broadway musical and the 1961 feature film West Side Story. Despite struggling at the 2021 box office because of the COVID-19 pandemic, fans and critics alike praised the Romeo and Juliet-inspired love story, particularly Zegler’s portrayal of the kindhearted ingénue. However, some “white executives” behind the production called into question the actress’ Latin heritage during the auditioning process, even though Zegler’s grandmother on her mom’s side of the family immigrated to the United States from Colombia back in the 1960s.
